Cantina Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano was born in Scansano, in the province of Grosseto, in 1972 and today has 170 members. Our winery’s production is focused on Morellino di Scansano, the most typical wine in the Maremma Toscana region. Thanks to the 700 hectares of vineyards that belong to our members, we can offer multiple facets of Morellino, a proof of its versatility.
Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano has a President, who is elected by our members every three years. Over the past 30 years Benedetto Grechi has covered this role, allowing continuity in our project of producing high quality wines. Benedetto is currently supported by vice-president Enzo Gabbanini. Plus there’s a special commitee of members who meet regularly to take the most important decisions together.
For us it’s essential that all our members take part in the process, that they feel part of a large team. Over the past few years, our members have adopted strict rules so as to improve the quality of our wines starting from the vineyard. This has increased each one’s participation.
We’re also proud to have many young people among our membrs. Some have followed their parents’ steps, some have gone back to farming. This makes us proud: it shows our mission of supporting our territory through our work is accomplished. But then, of course, there’s always space for improvement.
Our values
Since the beginning, 50 years ago, our mission was to make fine wines.
Since the beginning, 50 years ago, our mission was to make fine wines. The reason behind this choice is straightforward: we want to represent our territory in the best possible way. We believe our wines and especially our Morellino di Scansano, can act as ambassadors of Tuscan Maremma and what it can offer both to those who visit our region, and to those who want to travel in spirit, enjoying a glass of our wines at home or in their favourite restaurant.
To seek the finest quality, our Winery has set a series of goals:
- to always guarantee our products’ food safety following all the relevant laws and regulations and the specific demands of our Clients;
- to guarantee in every moment the health and safety of our employees;
- to adapt our structure ot the evolution of the market;
- to maintain a high involvement of all the staff, spreading a culture of quality, food safety, labour safety and the respect of the industry’s laws and regulations at every level in the company;
- to place the necessary attention to the evolution of the market in terms of energy consumption, the use of renewable sources of energy and all the necessary actions that can improve the performance of the waste management system.
Behind a glass of wine, there’s a lot of work. Quality is a continuous process.
Quality, however, cannot be reached easily. Behind a glass of wine there’s lots of work. This is something all the vine growers in our winery know well: quality is a constant process, which starts from attending daily to the vineyard, following the prescription of our agronomist based on grape variety, climate and characteristics of each vineyard.
This is why our vine growers follow strict rules throughout the year
This is why our vine growers follow strict rules throughout the year: only by doing this, the grapes they will collect at harvest time will be of the finest quality. And of course this hard work must be rewarded – it cannot be imposed. This is why it’s important for us to classify the grapes when they arrive at the winery, and reward every vine grower based on the quality of the grapes. In doing so, we’re happy to say that we’re among the cooperatives in Italy that pay their vine growers the most. We share profits with them, and in doing so we can spread the results of our work to 170 families and through them to the entire territory.
Environmental and social responsibility.
On top of this, we’re pursuing different project connected with environmental sustainability. We have certified and reduced the carbon footprint of our wines, and in general their environmental impact even through the VIVA Sustainable Wines certification from the Ministry of the Environment. In partnership with Università della Tuscia and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Pisa we’re using ozone in the vineyards and in the cellar, and Internet of Things technologies to minimise our impact.
