Social and Environmental Sustainability: our priority

Sustainability has always been important to us. As a cooperative, paying attention to our territory, to the people who live here, to our customers, has always been a priority. Sustainability, in this regards, must be considered both as social sustainability and environmental sustainability.

Social sustainability to us means safeguarding our region and its traditions, including wine production. It means investing, innovating, creating value and high quality products, with the involvement of everyone. In fact we’re very happy to have many young entrepreneurs and female entrepreneurs among our members, who have chosen to invest in agriculture, inspired by our work with Morellino di Scansano.

PEF certification: the first in Italy

In July 2018 we received the PEF certification from the European Union, the first EU certification measuring the enfironmental footprint along the entire supply chain, from the vineyard to the disposal of the packaging. An important result that is part of our long term commitment towards environmental sustainabiliy. Find out more.

Environmental Sustainability: the carbon footprint certifications

Social and envinromental sustainability must go hand in hand: to preserve the traditions of a region and create value, you must safeguard the environment. This is why we joined the Programma Nazionale per la Valutazione dell’Impronta Ambientale promoted by the Ministero dell’Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio e del Mare. The programme’s aim is to promote business strategies that foster sustainable development, paying priority to the reduction of greenhouse gases for large scale retail products.

The project through which Vignaioli del Morellino di Scansano have joined the National Programme (in collaboration with I.C.Studio Srl – Scuola Emas Ecolabel Toscana) refers to:

Environmental Sustainability: the VIVA Sustainable Wines project

Moreover, again with reference to Morellino di Scansano Docg and Morellino di Scansano Docg Roggiano we have received, as of 2015, the VIVA Sustainable Wine certification. The VIVA project was launched by the Ministero dell’Ambiente, della Tutela del Territorio e del Mare in July 2011. The goal was to measure the vine-wine production chain based on four elements: territoryair, vineyard and water. Here you can find the reports for both the Morellino di Scansano Docg and the Morellino di Scansano Roggiano Docg with the results received from the certificaiton.

What is Carbon Footprint?

The Carbon Footprint of a product measures greenhouse gas emissions, in terms of carbon dioxide, from the extraction of the raw materials (in our case from the cultivation of the vines) until the phase of consumption and disposal (of the empty bottle, for wine) thus offering an indication of the impact of that product on global climate change.

Innovation in the vineyard and in the cellar: Drones and sensores to minimise the environmental impact

Our projects also include a collaboration with Università della Tuscia and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Pisa to apply internet of things technologies in the vineyard and in the cellar, so as to minimise the environmental impact.
