Oggi come 2000 anni fa, l’Aia Nova era circondata da vigneti. Gi\u00e0 all’epoca, attorno a questa villa romana sorgevano fattorie e campi coltivati<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Last weekend, the\u00a0Luoghi del Tempo<\/strong>\u00a0festival offered the chance for a visit to the\u00a0Aia Nova villa.<\/strong>\u00a0The meeting began with a guided visit to the archeological site that dates back to around the\u00a0mid 1st century B.C<\/strong>., guided by the director of the\u00a0Museo Archeologico di Scansano<\/strong>, Marco Firmati<\/strong> – but there were also writers\u00a0Massimo Carlotto<\/strong>\u00a0and journalist \u00a0Alessandro Agostinelli<\/strong>. We were participating with a tasting of our wines and took the chance to shoot\u00a0some pictures.
\nFor those who were not there, we thought we could tell you a bit about the story of this place.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Roman times<\/strong>, in Maremma, began with the conquest of\u00a0\u00a0Vulci on behalf of the Romans, in 280 B.C. From that moment on, the entire coast from the Tiber to the Albegna river, which together with river Ombrone marks the boundaries of the\u00a0Docg Morellino di Scansano<\/strong>, was under the control of Rome. In this first phase, the countryside surrounding the settlements founded by the Romans (the Etruscan ones, such as that of\u00a0Ghiaccio Forte<\/strong>\u00a0were destroyed by the Romans) was\u00a0divided into regular parcels that were assigned to individuals. Soon in the area of Scansano too, the landscape was divided in this way and therefore the number of houses of the settlers\u00a0and \u00a0farms increased\u00a0– here, wine was already produced at the time.<\/p>\n

The Roman villa of Aia Nova is located in\u00a0Ripacci<\/strong>, a hamlet of\u00a0Scansano,\u00a0<\/strong>and belongs to the second phase, when between the 2nd\u00a0and the first decades of the 1st\u00a0century B.C. the first villas were built: wealth\u00a0was in fact being concentrated and many properties were united to form fewer and larger ones. These monumental, refined and luxurious villas were not just residences but real farms. Among these there was also\u00a0villa degli Anili<\/strong> or\u00a0villa di Aia Nova<\/strong>. The name was taken from a sign on the roof tiles on which the name\u00a0Publius Anilius appears together with an eagle, the symbol of the legion. It is thought that Publio Anilio was a\u00a0veteran official to whom a propriety in this area was assigned, as customary at the time.
\n\u00abThe villa, excavated only in part by the University of Santa Barbara (California), occupies a large terrace and is supported on its Eastern side by a cryptoporticus<\/em> that could host warehouses and production structures; an atrium with four columns gave light to the residential rooms among which one can recognize the triclinium and the surrounding\u00a0\u00a0cubicula<\/em> (bedrooms) for private use, and a large salon (oecus<\/em>) for guests; next to this, one can find the thermal baths with the typical rooms with different temperatures\u00a0(frigidarium<\/em>, tepidarium<\/em>, calidarium<\/em>) and the outhouse. Decorative bricks and mosaics enriched the floors while there were frescos on the walls\u00bb (Marco Firmati, Scansano, Guida al territorio e al Museo archeologico e della vite e del vino<\/em>).<\/p>\n
